Anti-ICE Walkout Templates

Our schools should be places of learning, not platforms for unchecked activism. Use these templates to hold your local and state officials accountable.

Template 1: Letter to School Leadership

Purpose: Direct advocacy at the local level.

This letter is designed for parents to send to their School Principal or District Superintendent. It addresses the immediate impact of anti-ICE walkouts on the school community, specifically highlighting how these disruptions can create a hostile environment for children of law enforcement families.

Why it’s important:

  • Challenges Double Standards: It points out the inconsistency of districts mandating “safe and inclusive” speech in some areas while allowing protests that disparage the families of other students.
  • Prioritizes Academics: It urges the administration to cancel planned disruptions and return the focus to core academic instruction.
  • Cites Legal Precedent: It reminds administrators that under Tinker v. Des Moines, student expression is not protected if it “materially and substantially disrupts” school operations.

Template 2: Letter to the State Attorney General

Purpose: Formal demand for state-level oversight and legal accountability.

This template is intended for the State Attorney General to demand an investigation into schools that permit or facilitate unauthorized walkouts. It shifts the focus from local policy to statewide legal compliance and the fundamental duties of the public school system.

Why it’s important:

  • Addresses Physical Safety: It highlights the negligence of allowing minors to leave campus during school hours, exposing them to traffic hazards, strangers, or potential violence.
  • Enforces Compulsory Attendance: It calls for the enforcement of laws that require students to be in school, rather than using the school day as a platform for unchecked activism.
  • Fights Viewpoint Discrimination: It warns that schools face legal liability if they selectively permit certain political protests while suppressing or punishing opposing views.
